Weight limits, trailer choice and site access decide whether a 20ft or 40ft container is the cheaper way to move your freight.

A 40ft container holds roughly twice the volume of a 20ft, but it does not cost twice as much to cart. Understanding where the crossover sits helps importers choose the right box before the booking is made rather than after the invoice arrives.
A 20ft container offers about 33 cubic metres; a 40ft offers about 67, and a 40ft high cube about 76. But road transport in Australia is constrained by axle mass, not volume. A heavily loaded 20ft box can be at legal mass limits while less than half full, which is why dense cargo — tiles, stone, liquids, machinery parts — usually ships in 20ft boxes.
If your cargo is light and bulky, the 40ft is almost always the better economic choice: one road movement instead of two.
As a rule of thumb, moving a 40ft container costs somewhat more than a 20ft on the same lane, but nowhere near double — the truck, driver and slot are the same. Measured per cubic metre delivered, the 40ft is materially cheaper.
Where 20ft boxes win is heavy freight and constrained sites. Two 20ft movements can also be combined on permitted combinations on approved routes, which changes the maths again on high-volume lanes.
A 40ft container on a skel trailer needs a long, straight approach and generous swing room. Many suburban Brisbane warehouses, especially older Rocklea, Salisbury and Northgate stock, were never designed for it. A 20ft box on a sliding skel can get into places a 40ft simply cannot.
If you are unsure, send photos of the driveway, gate width and internal turning area before booking. It is far cheaper to change the box size at the shipping stage than to discover the problem with a loaded truck on the street.
A 40ft high cube is 300mm taller than a standard box. On a standard skel that pushes overall height close to the limits for some door openings, awnings and low-clearance access. Check the height of anything the truck must pass under, including the warehouse roller door if the container is being tail-loaded.
