Step one: release, not arrival

A container is not moveable the moment the vessel berths. It has to be discharged, customs cleared, released by the shipping line once freight and any detention deposits are settled, and free of any quarantine or inspection hold. Only then can a carrier book a slot against it.

This is the single most common source of delay. If you tell your carrier the vessel arrives Tuesday, they will plan around Tuesday; if the release lands Thursday afternoon, everything downstream shifts. Send the release status, not the vessel ETA.

Step two: the timeslot

Every Port of Brisbane terminal works on a Vehicle Booking System. Slots are finite, released in blocks, and popular windows disappear quickly. A carrier with a terminal account books the slot, monitors it, and rebooks when the schedule moves.

Slot scarcity is why 'can you pick it up this afternoon' sometimes has an honest answer of no. It is also why free time should never be spent waiting for a decision — the last two days of a free-time window are the hardest to book.

Step three: the road leg and the unpack window

Once the box is on a trailer, the road leg is the predictable part. What varies is what happens at your site. A drop-and-swing (leaving the container on a trailer or on the ground) frees the truck immediately. A live unload keeps the truck and driver on site while your team empties it, and is charged for waiting time beyond an agreed free period.

If your unpack takes more than about an hour, a live unload is usually the more expensive option. Sites without a forklift are the exception: there, a sideloader delivery that sets the box on the ground is normally the cheapest way to get the freight to you.

Step four: the empty return

The container belongs to the shipping line and comes with a dehire reference nominating a specific empty container park. Return it late, or to the wrong park, and you pay extra hire days or a redirection fee. Return it early and you free up the hire clock.

Have the empty ready for collection: doors closed and pinned, no residual freight, no dunnage, and no pallets left inside. A rejected dehire means the box comes back to you and the trip is billed twice.

What actually drives the price

Distance matters less than people expect on metropolitan work; time matters more. The cost drivers that move a Brisbane container quote are container size and weight, whether the box needs a sideloader, how far the delivery site is from the port precinct, the time of day the terminal slot falls, and how long the truck is expected to stay on site.

Terminal fees, infrastructure charges and any wharf storage are pass-through costs. Ask for these to be itemised rather than bundled — it makes it obvious what is carrier margin and what is a port charge that any carrier would charge you.
