Releases, holds, VBS slots and the free-time clock — how a Port of Brisbane pickup actually gets booked and what makes it fail.

The Port of Brisbane at Fisherman Islands is Queensland's largest container port, and its terminals run on booking systems rather than turn-up-and-load. If you import through Brisbane, a working knowledge of the pickup process saves real money.
Three things must be true: the container is discharged and available in the terminal system, all holds are cleared (customs, biosecurity, shipping line), and the line has issued a release. Any one of these outstanding blocks the booking.
Biosecurity holds are the least predictable. If your cargo is in a category likely to be inspected — timber packaging, natural fibres, machinery with soil risk — build extra days into the plan.
Terminals release slots in windows. Carriers book against a container number, and the truck must arrive inside the window or risk being turned away and charged a futile fee. If the vessel schedule changes or a container is not available at slot time, the booking is amended or cancelled.
This is why carriers ask for container details early. Booking is not a same-hour action; it is a queue.
Two clocks run at once and people confuse them constantly. Demurrage (or terminal storage) is charged by the terminal when a container sits on the wharf beyond the allowed days. Detention is charged by the shipping line when you keep their container beyond the agreed free days, whether it is on the wharf, at your site or in a yard.
The practical rule: plan the pickup for the middle of the free-time window, not the end. That leaves room for a hold, a slot shortage or a wet-weather day without paying for it.
If the free-time window will close before your warehouse can take the container, the cheapest option is usually to pull the box off the wharf and stage it in a transport yard. Yard storage is typically far cheaper than terminal storage, and it stops the demurrage clock even if detention continues.
Decide this early. Once storage is accruing, the saving disappears.
